북촌단청공방은 북촌불교미술보존연구소와 서울시가 함께 하는 열린 공방입니다. 북촌불교미술연구소는 전통문화 발전과 불교미술의 온전한 전승을 위해 2대째 가업을 잇고 있습니다.
 
Bookchon Dancheong Gongbang is an open workshop that affiliated with Bookchon Buddhist Art Preservation Research Institute and Seoul. Bookchon Buddhist Art Preservation Research Intsitute is a place where the family business is inherited to the second generation to develop and restore traditional culture and the tradition of Buddhist art.

 아름다운 한국의 문화유산인 단청을 일반인들도 쉽게 접할 수 있도록 체험프로그램을 다양하게 만들었으며, 또한 불교미술과 문화재 수리 기술 / 기능을 배울 수 있는 전문 교육공방입니다.

 It is a professional training studio to learn Buddhist art and cultural property restore technology and skills with various experience programmes so that the general public can easily access to Dancheong, a beautiful Korean cultural heritage.

 북촌단청공방과 북촌불교미술보존연구소의 대표이자 김익홍 선생의 맏딸 김도래 선생과, 단운 김한옥 선생의 아들 김성헌 선생이 함께 문화재 복원작업 외 올바른 전통안료 연구개발, 문화재 수리 기술자 양성을 위한 전문교육, 문화 발전과 저변 확대를 위한 체험 프로그램 운영 및 전시, 출판 등 다방면으로 왕성한 활동을 하고 있습니다.

 Kim Dorae, the eldest daughter of Kim Ilhong is a chief executive officer of Bookchon Dancheong Gongbang and Bookchon Buddhist Art Preservation Research Institute. She and Kim Seongheon, a son of Kim Hanok are active in various fields such as developing proper traditional pigment research, professional education for the cultivation of cultural heritage repair technicians, operation of experience programs for cultural development and expansion, exhibition and publishing as well as repairing and restoring cultural heritage.

 불교미술에서는 단청, 불화, 조각 분야에 모두 능한 자를 금어(金魚)라 합니다. 금어였던 故김익홍 선생은 일생동안 수많은 불사를 하였고, 전통기법연구와 후학 양성에 일생을 바쳤습니다. 또한 전통미술단체인 기능인협회, 전승자협회, 동불회 등 전통공예인들이 하나가 될 수 있도록 많은 단체들을 설립하였습니다.

 One who masters at Dancheong, Buddhist painting, and sculpture in Buddhist art is called Geumeo(금어/金魚). Kim Ikhong was Geumeo therefore he committed to numerous Buddhist projects and devoted his life to studying traditional techniques and cultivating his followers. Also, he established many organizations to enable people to join the traditional art groups such as Crafts Association, Skill Bearers' Association, and Dongbulhoi.

 1961년 혜각스님을 만나 서울 성북구 팔정사 단청공사로 화원생활을 시작, 국내외 수많은 단청, 탱화, 개금작업을 하였습니다. 현재 문화재청 단청분야 전문위원으로 활동하고 있으며, 단청도감 등 다양한 서적을 저술하였습니다.

 He met Monk Hyegak in 1961 and started to work as a painter in a Dancheong project in Paljeongsa, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. Since then, he has worked on many different projects and did Dancheong, painting altar portrait of Buddha(Tanghwa), and Gaegeum. Currently, he is working as a Dancheong expert committee in the Cultural Heritage Administration and has published many books such as "An Illustrated Guide to Dancheong".

 故김익홍 선생과 부부의 연으로 불교미술에 입문하였습니다. 故김익홍 선생과 연구해온 전통기법과 수많은 현장경험을 자녀 및 후학들에게 전수하고 있습니다. 또한 개금에 능통한 불교미술가로 꾸준한 작업을 해오고 있습니다.

 She entered the field of Buddhist art because of the relationship with Kim Ilhong as a married couple. She is delivering her field experiences and traditional techniques that she had researched with Kim Ilhong to their children and the followers. Additionally, she is a Buddhist artist with good skills in metal plating and is making a continuous contribution to the development of Buddhist art.
